When F.R. Duval decided to make pointe shoes in 1982, he had manufacturing done in China. The original model featured a replaceable wooden (possibly bamboo) shank in some pointe shoes. The replaceable shank was discontinued in the late 1990's. It had been replaced with a plastic piece. Then, the feature was eliminated completely.
